Slow Start Stymies Titans in Summerville
Summerville, S.C.- The Trinity Collegiate varsity football team fought vailantly against the defending 3A state chamion Pinewood Prep Panthers on the road, but a slow start in the first quarter eventually doomed the Titans to defeat. After falling behind 37-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Titans would outscore the Panther 22-21 over the final three frames.
Both the offense and defense would find success after the first frame, with the Titan offense racking up 399 yards over the final three quarters and the defense only allowing two scores in the same time period.
Offensively, Davidson Lynch (Florence, SC/All Saints Episcopal Day School) led the way through the air with 213 yards, two touchdown passess and a two point conversion pass. His leading receiver was Garrison Copeland (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School) who corraled six passes for an outstanding 162 yards and both touchdowns, one of 51 yards and another going for 70 yards. Copeland would also showcase his versatility by taking snaps at quarterback, going 3 for 5 for 71 yards passing and running for 20 yards as well. Desmond Williams II (Florence, SC/Wilson High School) also contributed to a big day through the air, hauling in 7 passess for 122 yards. CJ Green (Darlington, SC/Darlington High School) caught a pass for a successful two-point conversion. On the ground, Robert Mack (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School) led the charge with 67 yards and a touchdown. Andre Jackson, Jr. (Hartsville, SC/Hartsville Middle School) chipped in 28 yards rushing as well.
Defensively, the Titans were led by Walker Willcox, Jr. (Florence, SC/Royall Elementary School) with 12 tackles, including 7 for loss. Mac Burch (Florence, SC/All Saints Episcopal Day School) also had a big day with 8 tackles, 3 of which were for loss, and a sack. Johnathon Cottingham (Darlington, SC/Darlington Middle School) also was a key contributer for the Titan defense with 5 tackles, 3 going for loss, and a safety. This is the first time in Trinity Collegiate football history that the Titans have registered safeties in back-to-back games. Desmond Williams II also showed up on the defensive side of the ball, corraling a Panthers pass for an interception.
After falling 58-22, Trinity Collegiate (1-2) wraps up their three game road trip in Charleston as they play the First Baptist Hurricanes (1-3). This will be the first matchup between the teams in Charleston since 2021. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
